ZPP strengthens ties with journalists at the ZUJ Congress to Advance Press Freedom and Accountability

On 12 September 2025, the Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) engaged media practitioners during the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) Congress in Harare, reaffirming the commitment to promoting press freedom, accountability, and human rights–based journalism. The engagement centred on ZPP’s working paper on the Safety of Journalists and the Enjoyment of Freedom of Expression, which guided discussions on strengthening media independence through evidence-based reporting and policy advocacy. ZPP’s contributions highlighted how human rights data can play a pivotal role in exposing patterns of violations, promoting institutional accountability, and protecting journalists from harassment and intimidation.

Participants explored opportunities for joint advocacy on policy reforms to address restrictive legislation such as the Criminal Codification Act and the Cyber and Data Protection Act, both of which have been used to criminalise journalism and stifle free expression. As ZPP continues to champion media freedom and journalist safety, it extends warm congratulations to the newly elected ZUJ Executive. We look forward to fruitful collaborations that will strengthen the voice of the media and advance democratic accountability in Zimbabwe.
